AZELLA Testing
The Arizona English Language Learner Assessment is a mandatory state assessment for students identified as English Language Learners (ELLs), designed to measure their English language proficiency
What is the AZELLA?
The Arizona English Language Learner Assessment (AZELLA) is a ~4 hour exam, taken annually by ELL students, until they achieve proficiency
Is the AZELLA required?
Yes, the AZELLA is a state-mandated test and is required for all students classified as ELL’s. Students must continue to take the AZELLA until they achieve a “Proficient” score, regardless of whether they are still receiving ELL services.
What if my student has withdrawn from ELL services?
Even if a student has withdrawn from ELL services, they are still required to participate in AZELLA testing each year until they achieve a Proficient score.
Can I opt out of AZELLA testing?
No, opting out of AZELLA testing is not permitted under Arizona state law. Testing is required annually for all eligible students until they reach English proficiency.
