Navigating AZELLA: Everything Parents and Students Need to Know
Read time: 5 minutes
For many students, the word "testing" can bring up a lot of nerves. If your student is an English Language Learner (ELL), you may have heard about AZELLA. Though it seems like another requirement, the AZELLA is a valuable tool to ensure students get the support they need to succeed.
What is the AZELLA?
The Arizona English Language Learner Assessment (AZELLA) is a mandatory state-mandated test that measures a student’s English language proficiency. Because English is the primary language of instruction in Arizona schools, it is vital that we understand where a student stands in their speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills.
The goal is not just to "test" but to be sure each student has the language tools to master subjects like math, science, and history.
Placement vs. Reassessment: What’s the Difference?
One of the most common questions we receive concerns the two types of AZELLA tests. Both are required by the state, but they serve different purposes in a student’s academic journey.
The Placement Test: The first AZELLA students take is the placement test. This gives a snapshot of their English proficiency. This result helps determine if a student qualifies for EL services and what level of support is needed.
The Reassessment Test: EL students are reassessed every February to check progress. Scoring "Proficient" means a student can "test out" of the EL program.
Alleviating Test Anxiety
It’s normal for students or parents to feel anxious about these assessments. Here’s how to stay calm:
It’s a Measurement, Not a Grade: The AZELLA doesn't affect a student's GPA. It is simply a tool to make sure the school is providing the right resources.
Practice Makes It Easier: Students can get familiar with the format by taking practice exams through TestNav (Click the link at the bottom labeled “Mic check & sample tests”).
Knowing what the screen looks like can take away a lot of the "unknown" factor.
We Support You: We offer Uber rides to and from our HUB locations to ensure getting to the test is as stress-free as possible.
Friday Service Hours: Your Secret Weapon
We want every student to feel confident as they head into their reassessment. That’s why we offer Friday Service Hours.
Friday Service Hours are dedicated online learning hours where students can work specifically on English language strategies. It’s like free, specialized English tutoring. These sessions are designed to be interactive and supportive, helping students sharpen the specific skills they’ll use on the AZELLA.
How to Join:
If you want to take advantage of these tutoring hours, simply contact the AZELLA Coordinator, Kelsey at kelseyr@studentswin.org to get on the schedule. It's an excellent way to build confidence and ensure you're ready to "test out!"
Convenient Testing Locations
Testing takes place in person at a physical location. For your convenience, we’ve reserved spaces at various private locations throughout Arizona. Grad Solutions staff will be present to meet students for testing at one of our physical locations.
Testing Privacy
We keep all data and testing details private. Keeping student information private is part of our usual policy.
Ready to Schedule?
AZELLA testing usually happens the third week of each month at our HUB locations. Remember, the AZELLA is just one step in your educational journey, and we are here to support you every step of the way!
