Understanding Military Pay & Allowances
Military pay and allowances can seem a bit confusing at first, but here's a simple breakdown for someone just starting out in the military:
1. Basic Pay: This is your main salary and is based on your rank and years of service. You may start higher if you have college credits or JROTC experience.
2. Allowances: are extra payments to cover living expenses. They’re mostly tax-free!
Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH): Helps pay for housing if you’re not living on base. How much: Depends on your rank, if you have dependents (like a spouse or kids), and where you’re stationed (since housing costs vary).
Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS): Helps cover food expenses. If you’re living in the barracks, you usually eat at the dining facility (DFAC), so this might go straight to covering that. If not, you get it as cash.
Clothing Allowance: Helps maintain your uniforms. You get an initial issue of uniforms when you first join, so this usually kicks in after your first year.
3. Special Pays (Extra $$ for Specific Jobs or Conditions). Examples:
Hazardous Duty Pay: If your job involves danger
Sea Pay: If you’re stationed on a ship
Deployment Pay: If you’re deployed to certain areas.
4. Bonuses: Extra money. Some jobs or branches offer sign-on bonuses to sweeten the deal
What’s the Breakdown?
During basic training, your housing and food are 100% covered, so you won’t see BAH or BAS. You’ll mainly just get basic pay during this time.
After Basic Training:
Basic Pay:
Average around $2,017 per month before taxes
Housing Allowance (BAH):
$800–$1,900 per month
Subsistence Allowance (BAS) for food:
$452.56 per month
As an E-1, if you’re living off-base with no dependents, on top of your basic pay your combined BAH and BAS could be between $1,200–$2,300/month, depending on location.
What Else? Your pay increases as you get promoted and gain experience. You’ll also get free health care, life insurance, and other perks like education benefits.
