University Rigor

What is the Timeline for Applying to a 4 Year College?

In our program, you work at your own pace, which means you can graduate at any point in the year. However, this doesn’t always sync with the process of applying to a 4-year college or university. They run on a set schedule which means you have to pay extra attention.

Below we'll go over what you need to know about the application process and the timeline after you decide on your school of choice. Remember, this is a year-long process and requires planning. You will need to begin the application in August of the year BEFORE you plan to attend. For example, you need to apply in August of 2025 if you plan to start college in August of 2026.

Timeline:

  • August-September: Begin your applications. Many universities use the Common App, which opens on August 1st. Also, start drafting your personal statement and essays.

  • October-November: Submit early decision or early action applications if you’re aiming for those deadlines, typically around November 1st or 15th. Request letters of recommendation from teachers and counselors.

  • December-January: Finalize and submit regular decision applications, usually due by January 1st or 15th.

  • March-April: Look out for admission decisions and financial aid packages. Compare your options and plan campus visits if needed.

  • May 1st: National College Decision Day. Submit your deposit to secure your spot at your chosen university.

What Else Should I Know?

We mentioned that getting admitted directly into a four-year school is a process that takes planning! Here are a few more things to think about:

  • Research: Find universities that fit your academic, social, and financial needs.

  • Testing: Take standardized tests like the SAT or ACT, if required.

  • Recommendations: Request letters of recommendation early to give your teachers time to write them.

  • Financial Aid: Fill out the FAFSA and any other financial aid forms to qualify for scholarships and grants.

Stay organized by using a calendar or planner to track deadlines. Be genuine and show your true self in your essays and applications. Apply to a mix of reach, match, and safety schools. Take advantage of support options—ask the Next Step team or your mentor for guidance.

Stay focused and remember, this is just the first step towards an exciting future.
